The Technical Association of Biotechnology (TAB) is the association of enthusiastic students of the Department of Biotechnology, NIT Warangal. This association plays a crucial role in fostering young individuals to gain more insights about this field which can help them to achieve their goals as a biotechnologist.
TAB renders an opportunity for the students to gain more information about this emerging area thereby helping them to broaden their horizons through various events like seminars, conferences, workshops. The main motto of TAB is to promote experiential learning for students so that they develop well-honed skills as well as create a conducive environment for them to interact amongst students and the faculty of the department.
TAB helps to take forward different ideologies to the biotechnology fraternity by conducting various activities throughout the year and also strives to address any issues faced by the students.

1. School Visit (23rd October 2021)
On 23rd October 2021, 9 students from NIT Warangal visited the Government Girls High School, Kazipet. The volunteers from the Technical Association of Biotechnology were: Supreetha, Karan, Siri poojitha, Manasa chava, Sai Charan, Himanshu, Sai teja, Aryan and Sirisha.
Understanding the importance of the youth in building a smart future for India, TAB NITW volunteers interacted with around 150 students of 9th and 10th class and had a lively discussion about science, innovation and biotechnology. Students understood how vaccines work, GM crops, insulin, cloning, and cancer. The students were fascinated by how forensic scientists use DNA samples to solve crimes. The students also saw a live experiment about how to determine blood groups.
The students and teachers at the school greatly appreciated the session conducted.
2. Inaugural Ceremony (25th October 2021)
The new executive body of the Technical Association of Biotechnology 2021-2022 was inducted in the inaugural ceremony held on 25th October 2021. The ceremony was a strong start for the new executive body in the presence of dignitaries such as Prof. N V Ramana Rao, Director NITW as the chief guest, Dr. K Thangaraj, Director of Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad and Dr. Ramana Murthy J V, Dean Student Welfare, NITW as guests of honour.
The Head of department of biotechnology, Dr. K Narasimhulu, The Faculty Advisor of TAB, Dr. Perugu Shyam, and Treasurer of TAB, Dr. Urmila Saxena, along with the guests of honour and chief guest, spoke motivating words to the students.
The Executive body, led by General Secretaries Lakshmi Priya V and Nandini Kanoria, put forward their plan of action for the year 2021-22, which was greatly appreciated by all dignitaries. The team plans on providing career guidance and mentoring, technical sessions and imparting social impact.
To mark the occasion, Dr. Thangaraj also presented the audience with a talk on Human origin, health and diseases that was truly intriguing and enlightening for all.
3. Prepzone (29 October 2021)
An online webinar, Prepzone, was conducted on 29th October 2021 to help students understand the different preparation strategies to ace the competitive exams of biotechnology. The speaker of this event was Dr. Shikha Jindal, Research associate, IIT Bombay.
She was the guiding force for all the participants and covered various exams like DBT-JRF, GATE, IIT JAM, CSIR-NET, TIFR, ICMR. She also provided valuable suggestions about pursuing higher education abroad and enlightened students on how to crack the barriers which they might encounter during their preparation journey.
Over 90 students from different colleges all over India participated in the webinar and found it very useful and informative.
4. Placement Overview (8th November 2021)
The webinar, Placement Overview, was conducted on 8th November 2021. 4th years shared their placement experience with the juniors and gave them an overview of different options available for biotechnology students and how to prepare for each. The discussed software, analyst, data science, management and Core biotech jobs.
The speakers of the event were Mohd Bilal Ahmad (Goldman Sachs, Software Engineer), Nandini Kanoria (OLA , Business Analyst), Srivardhini Reddy (Fractal Analytics, Data Analyst).
The event covered Placement Statistics since 2014, various roles and profiles offered, future scope of each profile, the recruitment procedure, and skills required to get into the respective field. The speakers also shared tips and tricks to crack interviews, prepare CVs and excel into their fields.
The event had around 80 participants and made this event very interactive. The students benefited from the candid discussion and guidance that will help them prepare for their future.
5. Research Internships: A to Z (21 Nov 2021)
An interactive webinar was conducted on 21st November 2021 to help students understand the various research internship opportunities available to them, and how to prepare for them with alumni. The guest alumni, Simran Asawa (PhD student at ETH Zurich, and NITW 2018 Batch) and Ashwin Narain (PhD student, University of Wurzburg, NITW 2017 Batch) very generously guided and mentored the students.
The event had 60+ attendees who learnt a lot. The discussion started by understanding what research meant to our guests, followed by the importance of research internships. They addressed the effects of covid on finding internships and how to overcome this loss. They also discussed how to go about writing cover letters, resumes, and differentiating your application from the rest.
A repository of various national and international internship programs was shared with the participants as well.
6. Two-Day National Conference on Advancements in Biotechnology (29-30 Jan 2022)
Two Day National Conference on Advancements in Biotechnology was organized on 29th and 30th Jan, 2022. The conference started with an Inaugural Ceremony. Prof. N.V. Ramana Rao, the director of NIT Warangal was the Chief Guest of the event. The guest of honor for the session was Dr. Ratnakar Palakodeti who is Currently the Vice President and Global Practice Head in Life Sciences and Medical Devices at Tech Mahindra.
The head of department of biotechnology, Dr. K Narasimhulu and The Faculty Advisor of TAB, Dr. Perugu Shyam addressed the participants by giving an overview of the Department of Biotechnology and the Technical Association of Biotechnology (TAB). The student coordinators for the event were Nandini Kanoria, Lakshmi Priya V and Neha Goel. Other volunteers were Jaswant Singh, Maharishi Dixit and Sai Charan Malyala.

The conference, through the 7 esteemed speakers, addressed the Advancements in the field of Biotechnology such as 3D bioprinting, stem cell technology, tissue engineering, nano technology and various other bioengineering fields.
The speakers also enlightened the participants regarding the New Age Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Startups and Innovations in the field, Intellectual Property Rights, entrepreneurship and a lot more.
Dr. Ratnakar Palakodeti, the guest of honor for the event shared his views on Digitizing RnD labs, Personalized Medicine and also about some applications on AI in the field of life sciences such as drug discovery.
Dr. Mayank Garg shared his immense knowledge on the role, development and applications of biosensors. He also shared his views on the applications of nanotechnology and how nanomaterials are important in the real world. This will open doors to many enthusiasts who want to pursue interdisciplinary fields involving electronics and life sciences as well.
Dr. Naresh Kasoju shared his views on the dynamic discipline of tissue engineering and how the experiments are taken from lab scale to the pilot scale. The participants also got to know various scaffolds and bio printing techniques.
Dr. Jagadeesh Gandala guided the participants regarding Biotech Entrepreneurship as a career option. He not only enlightened the students regarding the start-ups but also provided the motivation that patience and little efforts lead to success.
Dr. Uday Saxena shared his experience on the development of 3D models, cell culturing techniques and the applications of bioprinting. He also provided the knowledge of various biomaterials and the importance of 3D bioprinting in drug discovery.
Prof. C Malla Reddy shared his immense knowledge in the dynamic discipline of Crystal Engineering. His talk focussed on the advanced applications of crystals and the designing of solids. He enlightened us regarding how dynamic crystals are used in pharmaceutical industries.
Mr. Subhajit Saha shared his experience on Intellectual Property Rights and provided valuable suggestions on patents. His experience on incentivising innovations made participants understand how important it is to protect their own innovations legally.
The conference has helped the youth in clearing their vision and simultaneously provided them career opportunities and enlightened everyone with the developments that have taken place and are taking place in the beautiful and dynamic discipline of biotechnology. It might have also helped the participants to network with eminent scientists and entrepreneurs.
Over 500+ people registered for the conference that not only included the under graduates and post graduates but also the researchers and professors from various institutes and colleges all over India.
7. CareerXplore (Nov 2021 onwards)
Technical Association of Biotechnology, NITW has guided many individuals through the weekly infographics called “CAREERXPLORE” which informs students regarding the various career paths that an individual can opt for.
As a part of this informative event, we covered Academic Research, Software, Analytics, Biotech Industries and Entrepreneurship.
As biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field, the main motto of this event was to educate the students about various career paths, ways to pursue them and explain the relation between biotechnology and the other paths available.
This infographics event has helped students to know about the available career opportunities in detail, cleared confusion in aspects regarding career paths and also been a helping hand in deciding what career path to pursue.
8. Resume Building Workshop (23 Jan 2022)
The resume building workshop was conducted on 23rd January 2022 by the Technical Association of Biotechnology in collaboration with Big data, Analytics and consulting cell, NITW, to guide the upcoming final year students sitting for placements as well as to prepare the current second-year students to learn how to prepare the perfect resume.
The main motto of the resume building workshop was to reduce the mistakes that students commit in their resumes and increase the number of recruited students by the companies irrespective of their domains.
Keeping in mind that resume shortlisting is the basic criteria to clear for most of the recruiting companies, the students were given individual attention and feedback on their resumes.
The speakers of the workshop were Nandini Kanoria and Shubham Das, who are placed and experienced final year students. The event started by addressing the common mistakes made by students, followed by sharing tips. The speakers guided the participants about the resume format, content and also how to sell themselves best to differentiate themselves and increase the scope of clearing resume shortlisting.
Subsequently, speakers shared their experiences, and ended with a question and answer session with the participants. After the event, they shared resources among the students to help with resume writing.
The event had around 700 students attending the workshop from different colleges all over India showing that the need for guidance in preparing a good resume is very high.
9. Placement Experience Series (8th Jan 2022 Onwards)
Placement Experience Series is a series of social media posts that helps juniors prepare for the upcoming placement season. The series curates the interview experiences of all final year students who got placed during campus placements for various roles like core biotech, software, data analytics, management, etc.
Each post provides information collected from the final year placed students such as the kind of questions they were asked in interviews, the resources they prepared from, the kind of skills they acquired, and how they prepared for specific companies, etc.
The series aims to educate students to give them a headstart on how to start working on building a career in above mentioned roles.
10. Buddy System to guide juniors (9th Jan 2022 Onwards)
Buddy System is a continuous program to help those interested in doing projects related to various domains like web development, data analysis, machine learning, etc. It started on 9th January 2022.
Mentors guide juniors to acquire relevant skills required for internships/placements by providing relevant preparation material and clearing doubts weekly. Some of these skills include the basics of programming languages like python, C++, R and concepts like data structures and algorithms, object-oriented programming, database management systems, guesstimates, aptitude solving, etc.
Around eight placed students from final year, B.Tech Biotechnology and Mr Shivam (an alumnus from the batch of 2017-2021 Biotechnology, currently working as a software development engineer at Citi Bank) have volunteered to mentor juniors regarding any doubts in software/analytics related projects and interviews for placements. There are around thirty participants in this program from the 2nd and 3rd year of B.Tech Biotechnology mostly interested in exploring the software domain. This will eventually get them ready for some international coding competitions like ICPC and various coding hackathons too.
Further, we also aim to extend this program to those interested in core biotechnology and encourage interested aspirants to do projects in the labs.
Through this program, we aim to bridge the gap between the aspirants and their dream internships/jobs.
11. Eleganza: Freshers’ Event 2021 (22 Jan 2022)
Technical Association of Biotechnology, NITW welcomed freshers for the year 2021 with a heartwarming event “Eleganza”. The event saw active participation from many freshers.
They were given an introduction to TAB and Biotechnology. This event was conducted on 22nd January 2022.
As a part of this event, the freshers and sophomores interacted and learnt about each others. The event was jazzed up with a speaking round, where the participants shared their opinions. It was quite fun hearing different perspectives.
As a boost to the event, there were live as well as recorded singing and dancing performances by participants. Based on the performance and involvement, the participants were shortlisted for the final round, which is to be held in the coming few days.
As a result of this event, the participants came to know their mates and seniors a little better, and had a memorable evening.
12. Computational Biology Workshop (19-20 Feb 2022)
The Technical Association of Biotechnology (TAB), NIT (National Institute of Technology) Warangal successfully conducted Computational Biotechnology Workshops on Data Analysis in R, in Technozion 2022 on 19th and 20th February.
The event received an overwhelming response nationally, where more than 330 students from over 190 institutes participated to learn the practical use of the R scripting language for computational biology. The speaker of the workshop was Ms. Soundharya R, an MTech Biotechnology student at NIT Warangal, who is currently working on her Master’s thesis at IISc (Indian Institute of Science) Bangalore.
During the workshop, she shared her knowledge of gene expression, bioinformatic analysis of microarray data and data visualization in R. The hands-on workshop enabled attendees to understand and follow the steps along with the speaker and execute the programs on their own personal computers.
By the end of the event, the attendees had a clear idea of the demonstration given to them, and were confident of pursuing their own personal projects using computational biology. The diversity of students who attended the workshop helped fulfill its objectives of spreading the knowledge of computational biology to students of varying fields.
13. Battle of Bioinnovations (19-20 Feb 2022)
“Battle of Bioinnovations”' was organized by the Technical Association of Biotechnology (TAB) on 19th and 20th Feb, 2022 in the Annual Technical Fest “Technozion’22” of National Institute of Technology, Warangal.
The judges for the competition were Dr. Surajbhan Sevda, the Assistant Professor in Department of Biotechnology, NIT Warangal and Shantanu Sasidharan Sir, who is currently a Research Scholar at NIT Warangal.
A total of 60 students (grouped in 24 teams) from all over India participated in the competition. The event was divided into 2 rounds. The first round was conducted on 19th February, 2022 followed by the second round conducted on 20th Feb, 2022.
The participants were assigned 4 problem statements i.e. Biomedical Waste Management, Industrial Waste Management, Agri-Waste Management and Waste-Water Treatment. All problems were based on waste management in the emerging field of biotechnology. Since, for every problem some solutions have been adopted already but are not that effective. So, the main aim of the event was to develop technical and innovative solutions for these problems being faced in Biotechnology by considering all the perspectives.
The finalists presented their ideas along with a presentation in front of the jury panel. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session. The teams were judged upon the Effectiveness of Plan, Study of Existing Products, Design, Novelty and pitch delivery.
Coming to the results, the 1st position was tied in 2 teams i.e “Ansi&Diff” from Government Victoria College, Palakkad, Kerala and the team “Kainotomia” from Symbiosis Law School, Noida. Each team was given a prize money of Rs.6000/-. The 2nd position was achieved by team “BDACC” from National Institute of Technology, Warangal and got Rs.5000/- as the prize money. Last but not the least, a Special Mention was given to the team, “The Biologicals”, from National Institute of Technology, Warangal with a prize money of Rs.1000/-.
The main outcome of the event was that the participants gained a lot of knowledge regarding Biotechnology. The event also helped them in gaining new ideas to work comprehensively upon their projects. The judges even guided the participants on how they can bring their proposed innovations and apply the solutions in real life. So, the event was all amazing and the participants enjoyed it as it focussed on technology as well as the innovations simultaneously in the emerging field of biotechnology.
14. Essay Writing Competition (19 Feb 2022)
The Essay Writing Competition, which was conducted by TAB for Technozion'22 on 19th February, saw a terrific turnout with students participating from over 50 institutions around India.
The topics were related to current advancements in biotechnology and revolved around antimicrobial resistance, cloning and organ transplantation. The event was crafted as an ideal opportunity for students in STEM with a knack for writing.
The winning pieces tactfully dealt with the trending topics given and were concluded with astute observations. We had a tough time picking up a few out of the overwhelming talent encountered! After a careful evaluation, we finalized 3 winners. The winners bagged cash prizes worth 6K.

15. Sustainable Living Competition (20 Feb 2022)
On February 20, 2022, as part of Technozion'22, Technical Association of Biotechnology (TAB) conducted a Sustainable Living Competition focused on the importance of sustainability in all technological endeavors. Since the resources are depleting, there is a desperate need for the youth to adopt a sustainable lifestyle.
The competition was open to all colleges across India and 107 institutes including various NITs, IITs, IIMs, etc participated with 149 registrations.
The event happened in 2 rounds: Quiz and Extempore. The shortlisted participants from the quiz competed in the extempore. Each person was given 3 minutes of preparation time followed by 2 minutes to speak in front of the judges, Tina Chandna and Sethuraman, both M.Tech students at NIT Warangal.
The winners won a cash pool of 10k. The winners were:
1st prize- Jasmine Kaur from Dr. BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology Jalandhar
2nd prize- Wamika Sharma from KJ Somaiya college of Engineering
3rd prize- Shaivya Khetan from Delhi University
